Sex Assault and the Men in Blue: Two Officers Bring Scandal to Local Police Departments

Suffice it to say, it's not a good week so far for area police, with two officers—one in Aurora, the other in Greeley—accused of using their authority and power to sexually assault women.

In the Denver suburb, 51-year-old officer Michael Mangino is facing several felonies, including sexual exploitation of a child, after arresting a 15-year-old runaway girl and forcing her to take explicit photos of herself (Aurora Sentinel). Mangino, who is out of jail on bail, was a drug-awareness officer who worked with children and may have more victims, investigators say. The accusation brings additional disgrace to the department, which in December saw Sergeant Morgan Sellman, the chief of the DARE unit, arrested on charges of child pornography and later resign.

And in Greeley, 28-year-old police officer Daniel Shepherd was arrested on suspicion of sexually assaulting a 19-year-old woman during a traffic stop (Greeley Tribune). He has not been charged and is also out on bail.
