Editor’s Note: It has come to our attention that Gordo Loco has closed pending a liquor license review.

Gordo Loco, one of the wackier additions to Highland, is destined to attract attention, if only for its five-pound El Diablo burrito challenge. Anyone who eats the massive envelope of chipotle chicken, shredded pork, citrus-glazed carnitas, refried beans, french fries, and green-chili cheese folded into three giant flour tortillas in less than 20 minutes eats for free.

Open less than a month, the Mexican and American food joint (located in the former home of La Loma), serves some of the fattest, craziest burrito and burger combinations in town (thus the name, Gordo Loco). Order the beer-battered, deep-fried bacon burger–or perhaps the special burger of the day–served between slices of a massive glazed donut.

For mere mortals, there are also a few healthy options, such as grilled mahi tacos with a refreshing mango salsa or a decent house salad with chile-lime vinaigrette.

My personal favorites are the half-pound piñata and gaucho burgers. The former is stuffed with cheese and green chile, and the latter is topped with carnitas, cheddar, barbecue sauce, and an onion ring. Both are sided with rice and beans or perfectly seasoned fries.

Tip: Save room for the fabulously thick and creamy milk shakes in unusual flavors such as Nutella-bacon, horchata, and dulce de leche.
