Best Bites: Manneken Frites

A frosty brew and pipin' hot Belgian-style fries: that's just what you'll find at Manneken Frites in Olde Town Arvada. In fact, that's all you'll find, as this tiny shop specializes in just one item: hand-cut frites. With such a niche focus, the offerings had better be perfect—and they are. More steak fry than matchstick, these skin-on, salty frites are dense and potatoey without becoming overly starchy.

The goods disappear so quickly you'll do best to order a double (pictured), along with a sauce flight—choose four sauces from the roster of 19. My go-tos are the thick and cucumbery tzatziki and the sauce andalouse, a rich mayo-based sauce made of red and green peppers, onion, and tomato paste. Next time, I plan on dipping into the mango chutney mayo and the sucker punch barbecue.

Sip on this: Order a Belgian brew—choices run the gamut from Hoegaarden on draft or a bottled Kasteel Rouge.
