It so happens that I get a lot of samples sent to me. On any given day that means hot sauces, doughnuts, chocolate from far-flung places, energy drinks containing the latest super fruit, and everything in between. More often than not, the goods are fine but not necessarily noteworthy. But, a couple weeks ago, a box of oatmeal cream pies from Simple Sugar Bakery landed on my desk.

This Washington Park bakery makes treats with real ingredients (butter, cream, eggs) and no preservatives. The result is chewy oatmeal cookies that taste homemade and come sandwiched with silky vanilla marshmallow fluff that’s reminiscent of soft buttercream frosting. Sorry, Little Debbie, Simple Sugar has you beat.

Tip: Though designed for dessert, I most enjoyed the treats with my morning coffee.
