A good coffeeshop is one that encourages you to linger. Of course, you can rush in for an Americano to go but you should leave wishing you could stay and while away the hours. Tree Haus Bistro, located on the corner of 17th Avenue and Lafayette Street in Uptown, is one such spot. The converted Victorian's collection of cheerful rooms lays the groundwork for a cozy afternoon of working, reading, or catching up with a friend.
One part coffeeshop and one part bistro, the Tree Haus menu expands beyond bagels and pastries. Classic sandwich combinations such as turkey with cranberry and roast beef with horseradish get updates with ingredients like toasted sage leaves and balsamic-marinated onions. There are also gluten-free options such as the Joshua (chicken salad with sesame-soy dressing wrapped in nori), and a couple veggie sandwiches, including the Madrone (pictured) with cucumber, sun-dried tomato pesto, onion, roasted red peppers, and lettuce. In the evenings, look for small plates and $3 beer and wine.
Don't miss the kitchen's spin on the pain au chocolate. While not a chocolate-filled croissant, Tree Haus' version is shortbread spiraled with Nutella and chopped nuts. I can see myself stopping by just for that cookie—and then staying a while.
Valentine's Day Bonus: Drop by February 14–18 from 6 to 9 p.m, for a special $25, four-course tapas tasting menu that includes a glass of wine or beer.
