The World Series is almost here (the first game is October 24), and even though the Colorado Rockies couldn’t get it done this season, their fans have something else to get excited about. No, we didn’t discover the fastball to win, but we did dream up a hot dog that could.
In a search for Denver's official hot dog (why not? We already have an omelet, the Windy City has the Chicago Dog, Boston has baked beans...) we polled some of our favorite places—the Über Sausage, Billy's Gourmet Hot Dogs, Steve's Snappin' Dogs, and Biker Jim's Gourmet Dogs—and asked what they thought. With that, the Denver dog was born:
First, take a tortilla, insists Steve Ballas, from Steve's Snappin' Dogs, "We have such a Mexican food influence, it can't be a Denver dog without the tortilla." For the wiener itself, it's gotta be the bison dog from the Über Sausage. Add sliced bacon, lettuce, and tomato (more contributions from Ballas) and creamy cheddar and barbecue sauces from Billy's. The final toppings come from Jim Pittenger of Biker Jim's: "caramelized onions and, of course, some jalapeños and banana peppers—that is very Denver." Wrap it all up and eat like a burrito.
We may not have a killer baseball team, but we have a (fictional) hot dog that can compete with anyone.

THIS STORY WAS PART OF 5280's 20 DAYS OF GIVEAWAYS!
gift certificate to Texas de Brazil
It would certainly be fun to win that and try Texas de Brazil out - have not been there before.
You can't just have one...
I think Colorado is so dynamic, it would be hard to have just one. You would need to have a separate one for Boulder, Denver, Pueblo, etc.
Gimme hot dogs!!
my colorado dog would be grilled and smothered with chili, onions, mustard and cheese. Yum :-)
Need Mustard
It doesn't matter what kind of dog it is, it has to have mustard and real pickle relish (not the colored green stuff) is good too.
Anything hot dog...
...is good by me. That concoction mentioned above sounds pretty hard to beat. Pair it witha good micro brew and we're ont o something!
My Denver Dog
Jalapeno elk dog, green chili, shreeded monterey cheese, and watermelon pico w/ mint all wrapped in a blue corn tortilla = nom nom nom :)
Perfect Dog
I absolutely Love Biker Jim's and take all my out of town friends there in the summer during a Rockies Game! My favorite is the pheasant dog....ideal with lettuce, tomato and a big pickle.
Hard to Choose
I love all the places mentioned in the article and it's hard to choose which is my favorite! I must say though I don't think I could handle the denver dog they mentioned-way too spicy!!
Apple slaw
I love the chicken sausage with apple slaw at Uber Sausage--quite ideal!
MUST LOVE DOGS!
My husband is always looking for a good "dog". He's been to Biker Jim's and loves it so now he'll have to try the others!
Marco's Hot Dogs in Longmont
My ideal Denver-area hot dog would be made/purchased at Marco's Hot Dogs on 17th Avenue just east of Main Street in Longmont. It's also a taco stand, so it's easy to add some heat to the dogs to get the tails a waggin'!
Good eatin'
Texas de Brazil gift card? Yes please!
Denver Dog
That all sounds delicious, except you threw me with the lettuce and tomato. A little too much.

arf arf
great idea...now spread the word
snappin
Love the encasements topped with all the love it deserves.
Dogs
Keep it simple, too many toppings takes away from the dog.
Hot Dogs and Texas de Brazil
Delish
Bacon
DELISH
I am such a hot dog lover, the ideal dog sounds so delicious I'm salivating just thinking about it (just like one of Pavlov's dogs)
Delicious
Wow, I'm reading CLPAYNE's hotdog description and I'll defer to that as the ideal dog. Yum.
hot dogs
The only place I've gotten a hotdog in Denver was at Mustard's Last Stand near the DU campus. They were awesome!!!
All You Can Eat Meat
You can't beat all you can eat meat!
baseball & hotdogs
I'll eat the hot dogs while watching my favorite team in the playoffs/World Series. Go Cards!
Hot Dogs
Not a HUGE fan of hot dogs, but those sound delish.......quite the conundrum!
Yum!
I was with the hot dog up until the peppers. Sounds delicious!
All the different hot dogs!
I've heard people talk about these places before they go to any kind of sports game downtown but I have not gone to them. I have passed Uber Sausage on Colefax and think I might stop in. I thought al these hot dog places were the same, but they really dress up the dogs to make them something unique!
Hot Dog!
Watching the division series playoffs and dreaming of dogs!
Brazilian Steakhouse
So GOOD. One of the few times dining out I don't know enough to stop. Meat melts in your mouth.
Red Hot
That's what we call them in western New York . . . only they are so much better here!
Holy Hot Dog!
Wow, I have to try that hot dog!! It sounds amazing! I also adore Texas de Brasil! It is simply fantastic!
Hot Dog!
Creativity runs wild!
Skeptical
Although I am skeptical, take off the hot peppers and I am willing to try it.
Denver Dog
Sorry but the tortilla has to go , put it on a bun
Chicago Hot Dog
Sorry, but growing up in the burbs of Chicago, I'm always going to be partial to the Vienna Beef hotdog w/the poppy seed bun.
Ideal Denver Dog??
Wouldn't a Denver Dog need to be organic and served on a gluten-free bun? Seriously, though, it's hard to imagine anything trumping Chicago-style dogs.
Love, Love, Love
a hot dog with ketchup, mustard and tons of onions!!
Texas de Brazil
Here doggie
Tortilla dogs sound interesting
