Hypothetical: The Official Denver Hot Dog

The World Series is almost here (the first game is October 24), and even though the Colorado Rockies couldn’t get it done this season, their fans have something else to get excited about. No, we didn’t discover the fastball to win, but we did dream up a hot dog that could.

In a search for Denver's official hot dog (why not? We already have an omelet, the Windy City has the Chicago Dog, Boston has baked beans...) we polled some of our favorite places—the Über Sausage, Billy's Gourmet Hot Dogs, Steve's Snappin' Dogs, and Biker Jim's Gourmet Dogs—and asked what they thought. With that, the Denver dog was born:

First, take a tortilla, insists Steve Ballas, from Steve's Snappin' Dogs, "We have such a Mexican food influence, it can't be a Denver dog without the tortilla." For the wiener itself, it's gotta be the bison dog from the Über Sausage. Add sliced bacon, lettuce, and tomato (more contributions from Ballas) and creamy cheddar and barbecue sauces from Billy's. The final toppings come from Jim Pittenger of Biker Jim's: "caramelized onions and, of course, some jalapeños and banana peppers—that is very Denver." Wrap it all up and eat like a burrito.

We may not have a killer baseball team, but we have a (fictional) hot dog that can compete with anyone.

DOGS!!

A Chicago Dog of Course!!

Denver Dog

I would love a soft white cheese like Teleme or Monterrey even, roasted peppers, and roasted onions piled on.

Dogs

All they do is keep getting better!!!

Almost...

It needs green chiles!!

Hot Dog Place

I like the hot dog place that's here in Highlnds Ranch, but I can't remember the name.  Also Juicy burgers and dogs is great.

The Denver Dog!

This sounds really good and somewhat healthy. I'd give it a try.

Colorado's finest

A scrumptious beer bread bun made from Colorado's Fat Tire amber paired with a Bison hot dog and topped with Olathe sweet corn and tomatillo salsa, caramelized sweet onions, and homemade catsup with a poblano pepper kick. Denver delicious.

Denver Dog now!

Colfax and Monroe $4.25

medically indicated

I think there should be state-licensed dispensaries for officially registered herbed and spiced Denver Dogs.

Ideal Dog

I like the bison dog from Uber sausage with the tortilla.  I would add cheddar cheese + guacamole + roasted green chiles a la my favorite "El Chilango" Park Burger!   Yum!

Yummmm

I like the idea of the tortilla, but I think there is too many conflicting flavors.  Let's keep the mexican theme with a modern twist throughout.

Plain Jane

Love me some good o'l nathan's hot dogs with just ketchup and MAYBE some mustard on my sassy days!

Denver Dog

I think that has a nice ring to it!

That's all a bit much. I'd do

That's all a bit much. I'd do as they described, but leave off the bacon, lettuce, tomato, creamy cheddar, barbecue sauce and banana peppers.

Ideal hotdog?

Keep it simple with ketchup, mustard, and relish please!

Ideal dog

That dog sounds like a bit much to me. I agree that starting with a bison dog is key in Denver...but I'd really stick to the basics of either ketchup or BBQ sauce.

even better...

green chili would make this hot dog burrito even more Denver I think!

Hot dog!

Let's give a few of these dog's to our boys in purple during spring training and hope they have a much more stellar season next year!

Hot Diggity Dog

No matter where you are, it's always a great time for a hot dog. More than a 100 years of happiness.

Denver Dog?

I'm in! Sounds amazing... order up!

I appreciate the official hot dog...

...but how can you leave out The Hawt Dog & Sausage Eatery, who've recreated the hot dog in incredibly creative ways??

Hot dog

I'm not down with the tortilla idea. The Denver dog would have to have jalepenos, though.

Denver Dog

My ideal Denver dog would have a pickle, celery salt, tomatoes and mustard.

Denver dog!

Yummy!  Nothing better than a delicious dog!

Denver Dog

Seriously, who doesn't love a good hot dog! Denver Dog, I love you...in theory.

Dogs!

I am definitely a simple girl when it comes to my hot dogs, but the tortilla is a great idea. I would put homemade chili, carmalized onions, and goat cheese on mine and then wrap it in a tortilla. Thanks for that great idea!

Yum!

Steves Snappin' Dogs is by far the undisputed go to joint for dogs in Denver...

Tortilla is a great idea!

Never thought to add a tortilla! I know what I will try the next time I have a hot-dog!

Gimme the bun.

I'd take all that gladly, but leave the tortilla and give me the bun.

Hot Dogs!

Hebrew National at Coor's Field!

The perfect hot dog...

Just mustard on my dog is sufficient.  Maybe some fresh diced onions.   But nothing more.

Texas de Brazil

One of my favorite restaurants and close by in Stapleton! A Carnivores delight!

Biker Jim's baby!

Biker Jim's has always had my favorite selection of dogs.

South American Dinner

Love South american style dinners. Great way to eat!

Damn Good Dog !!

Sounds perfect !!!

Texas de Brazil sounds yummy!

Our 37th wedding anniversary is coming up. This would be a lovely place to celebrate!

mmm goning to have to try that.

That sounds amazing. Will have to try that, I like making a pot of chili and smothering the dog. I use red never tried the green.

Peachy Dog

Ready for this?!?

Pork dog topped with a spicy Palisade Peach chutney housed in a corn arepa

Is it lunch time yet?

sounds great!

Denver Dog

Sounds like a good idea to me!

I want one

I know, is not summer, but I want one

I want one

I know, is not summer, but I want one

Hot Dog

add chili. that is all! :)

Hot Dog!

There is nothing like a good, flavorful 'dog!

Ooo - I like the Grilled Peach and Salsa Idea

I tend to not eat meat, but a super quality local dog with grilled peaches and a fresh tomatilla sauce would be too much for me to pass up!

Ideal Hot dog

Ideal Hot dog would be good quality meat (bison), in a pretzel roll, with beer mutard and good cheese!  Are these emails timed to be sent right around lunch time when everyone is hungry? :)

Wild Game Dogs

I love wild game sausage of just about any kind. Top it off with cheese and I'm in heaven.

The Denver Dog

Sounds good!  Basically needs the tortilla,  grilled hot dog or brat wrapped in bacon, shredded lettuce, tomato, red onion, jalapenos, some pepper jack cheese and the condiment of choice - mine would be spicy brown mustard.  Yum!!

probably shouldn't have read

probably shouldn't have read this right before lunch...so hungry now!

Rocky Dog

What about the Rocky Dog at Coors Field? Its already in Denver, and delicious.
