Go Now: Fooducopia Corner Store

If I had my pick, everyday would begin with breakfast at Fooducopia Corner Store, a two-month-old market and adjoining cafe at the intersection of Race and Kentucky in the Washington Park neighborhood. Chef and co-owner Richard Glover (of the shuttered Chi Bistro) mans the burners, and turns out dishes such as savory French toast (pictured) with extra-thick slices of Texas toast soaked in a batter that trades cinnamon and sugar for salt and pepper and swaps fruit toppings for lightly wilted spinach, fresh heirloom tomatoes, goat cheese, sautéed wild mushrooms, and a side of mushroom hollandaise.

The full menu (breakfast and lunch) is available all day until 3 p.m. Mid-day, nibble on fresh salads and robust sandwiches, such as the panini-style roast beef with Finnish mustard and sweet caramelized onions. Lunch-goers should make sure not to miss the baked cinnamon apple dessert. A riff on the apple dumpling, Glover serves a cored, skin-on apple baked in delicate puff pastry topped with caramel, whipped cream, and a drizzle of cherry coulis.

Bonus: Co-owner Tim Lymberopoulos partnered with Glover to turn the corner spot into a neighborhood hub. Here, Wash Park residents can either call the grocery for delivery or stop in for items such as fresh produce, Breadworks bread, and a carefully honed selection of local pantry items such as Frank’s Whiskey Caramel from Sweet and Saucy and Anija’s sweet-hot lime mustard.
