When we first heard that the Sopp & Truscott bakery in Silver Plume was for sale back in 2009, we were flummoxed: The shop’s jalapeño cheddar loaf was a go-to excuse to get off I-70 for a few minutes on a Sunday afternoon. Where were we to get our carb-loaded fix post-hike or post-ski?
Worry not, as there are plenty of carbs to imbibe at the newly opened Bread Bar. By weekday, the paint-flecked historic building in quiet Silver Plume houses the production line of Dram Apothecary, a company that produces teas and cocktails bitters (sans preservatives and made with as many wild-sourced Colorado ingredients as possible). On Fridays and Saturdays, the space transitions into a hipster bar in the mountains where you’re likely to rub elbows with artisans, leather crafters, and musicians.
Dram’s owner, Shae Whitney, opened Bread Bar with her boyfriend Brady Becker (co-founder of the food app Forkly) as a place to showcase Dram’s line, which includes options like the Hair of the Dog Hangover Tonic (think: classic Angostura bitters) and Wild Mountain Sage Bitters. “People can come up and have a personal experience,” Whitney says. “Almost 100 percent of the time they walk away with some bitters.”
While the bar does offer a few munchies, like a sandwich offering and a cheese plate sourced from the Truffle Cheese Shop, the focus is on booze. Bread-lovers won’t be disappointed, though: Whitney and Becker have kept Sopp & Truscott’s tradition of an “Honor” box filled with new recipes of yeasty goodies for hungry travelers.
