Take Two...Denver's losing another big name to Chicago. James Mazzio, named one of Food & Wine's Best New Chefs in 1999 is reportedly pulling up stakes and leaving for the Windy City. The former top toque at 15 Degrees, Triana, and Chef Jam, Mazzio has recently worked up a new menu at Rezzo, a family-style Italian restaurant in Lafayette. No word on what he'll be doing in Chicago...First...

An interesting postscript on Doug Dean, the former House Speaker, who we wrote about earlier today. Dean would later marry the woman whose home he was accused of breaking into. At the time, the Colorado Republican also said he was through with politics."I want to be a husband and a dad and not a politician," he said. The fact that Dean has now been named to head the Public Utilities Commission...

Both of Denver's dailies today politely report the news that former Colorado House Speaker Doug Dean has been named director of the state's Public Utilities Commission. I say "politely" because neither the Post nor the News saw fit to mention the incident for which Dean was best known during his years as a state legislator. In May 2001, Dean admitted using a screwdriver to break into a former...

I have a new obsession. I am the proud new owner of an iPod, and it has taken over my daily life. (I know, I'm a little late getting on board with this, but, hey, better late than never.) It's not the iPod, or the iPod Mini even, but the itsy-bitsy, totally affordable iPod Shuffle. (Girlie here is on a budget, don't you know.) Suddenly, my CD collection is exciting again. My 1995-98...

The Arapaphoe County District Attorneys' Office has said the reason Brent J. Brents wasn't arrested earlier was because of e-mails that went to a police officer who didn't have an e-mail account. In a letter to the editor in today's Denver Post, a reader asks for the proof, and suggests a cover-up is in the works.....The excuse for the one-month delay in acting on the child molestation...

Dan Haley reports in today's Denver Post that U.S. Rep. Mark Udall may be getting closer to making a decision about jumping into the 2006 race for Governor. The Boulder congressman, who has been coy about his intentions, met privately last week with Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper, possibly to seek his support. Udall also apparently met with U.S. Sen. Ken Salazar. Hickenlooper, whose name has been...

If the title of this post applies to you, you might just be the person or company lucky enough to blast Hunter Thompson's ashes into the wild blue yonder. So many cannon owners have volunteered their weaponry, the Aspen Daily News is holding a contest: In 100 words or less, by snail mail only, tell them why you should be selected. Entries are due by March 13. Your cannon must be ready on...

It seems that not everyone agrees with Hunter Thompson's wife and son that his suicide was a fitting end and the act of a champion -- particularly those with a family member or close friend who has recently taken his or her own life. Diane Carman, in today's Denver post, sadly decries the recent suicide of her cousin, who was plagued by mental health issues. One of her messages: We need...
