Cabinets

High-gloss Ikea Akurum cabinets, made primarily of fiberboard, provide upper and lower storage, and the maple-veneer countertops were custom-made and stained on-site. “Durable surfaces like this are easy to wipe down,” Schaefer says.

Display

Custom bulletin boards and open shelving—with brackets spray-painted fuchsia—serve as display spaces for the girls’ artwork and photos.

Desk

Schaefer designed the peninsula as an arts-and-crafts area that will easily accommodate laptops and homework once the girls are older. “Table height worked better than barstool height here,” she says.

Paint

Per the homeowner’s request, Schaefer chose the punchy (and timeless) Benjamin Moore Poolside Blue for an accent wall.

Decor

A black-and-white Ikea Lappljung Ruta low-pile rug grounds the space, while lime-green, easy-to-clean Ikea Bernhard chairs pop against the white cabinetry.
