With the mercury pushing 90 degrees, I’ve turned off my stove and have been on the lookout for easy summer eats that don’t leave me trapped in a hot kitchen. That’s how I discovered Highland’s month-old Prost Fine Beers and Sausages, which lured me in with a shady biergarten with oompah music.
Not to be confused with the Prost Brewery just down the road on 19th Street, this mini hofbrauhaus is an offshoot of the popular Prost beer house in Frisco. The menu is simple: Bavarian-style sausages, soups and sandwiches, and cold draught beers.
Offering its own list of a dozen draught beers and three rotating favorites, Prost Fine Beer lives up to its name with choices like the unfiltered Hacker-Pschorr Hefe Weisse and the smooth Erdinger Dunkel dark wheat beer. An enormous list of sausages makes choosing a favorite difficult, especially when the flavors include elk jalapeno cheddar; pheasant, mushroom and Parmesan; buffalo green chile and chipotle; wild boar with apricots and cranberry; and the signature Oktoberfest beer and pork brat. The sides, however, are lackluster with both the gurken salat and the German potato salat arriving underdressed and underseasoned. Skip those in favor of the tangy sauerkraut or a warm and chewy pretzel from Styria Bakery.
Bonus: Visit Prost’s well stocked condiment bar for a robust selection of house-made mustards.
