Film Festival Flix: The Athlete

Tags: The Athlete, Paralympics, Olympics, Ethiopia, dog sledding, archery, Abebe Bikila

In 1960 (well before barefoot running was mainstream), Ethiopian Abebe Bikila ran through the streets of Rome sans shoes on his way to becoming the first African to win Olympic gold in the marathon. Bikila, who won back-to-back gold medals in the event, is the protaganist of the biopic The Athlete. After being paralyzed in a car accident in 1969, Bikila focused on other athletic pursuits, including archery at the Paralympics and dog sledding. The screening is part of Comedy Works' new Film Festival Flix program, which will be held the second Tuesday of every month. Tue 6:30 p.m.
