The miniscule and atomic details in nature are often overlooked in day-to-day activity. Local Colorado painter Robert Spellman uses his contemporary style to spotlight anomalous pieces of nature. In pieces such as “Two-Spotted Lady Beetle,” and “Twice-Stabbed lady Beetle,” Spellman uses texture and contrast to emphasize the body of a single beetle: The result is a background that emulates parchment paper and a foreground that’s occupied by an isolated subject—a bug that looks as though it’s about to pop off of the page.
