Duke Ellington and pianist Billy Strayhorn created a jazz variation on Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker in 1960. In this performance, University of Colorado Boulder’s Concert Jazz Ensemble will try out their own rendition of the inventive composition. You can expect the “Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy” and the “Waltz of the Flowers” that the original show is known for, but in this production, they’re a little more jitterbug than grand jeté.
