Star-crossed lovers can be found across all continents—and in this ballet retelling of Shakespeare’s classic love story, they’ve moved from Verona to New Orleans. Drawing inspiration from America’s multicultural background and traditional African dance, Denver-based choreographer Cleo Parker Robinson has imagined title characters in a family feud over religious differences: one is Christian, while the other is Yoruba. To further complement the geographical move, selections from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess will be woven into the classic Romeo and Juliet score by Sergei Prokofiev.
