Get Involved is a weekly series pointing readers toward community-oriented events, volunteer opportunities, and good causes in Colorado.
Have some extra time this week before this weekend’s pending festivities? Spend it at one of these community-supporting events.
Laugh for Change: The annual Laugh Yourself Blue is held every April, which is Autism Awareness Month. This year, the night of standup comedy, dining, and auctions will take place at the Denver Performing Arts Complex, and benefit Firefly Autism, a local organization that works with the young children and families affected by the disorder. Wed 6:30 p.m., 950 13th St.
Bonus: Read Lindsey Koehler’s in-depth look at the struggles Coloradan families affected by autism face here.
Mi Casa es Su Casa: Head to Lola for Dos Casas, an evening of food, drink, a silent auction, and live music by the Congress. The culinary event benefits Brent’s Place, a local organization that works to provide free, long-term home for children affected by cancer (and their families) that need to travel to Denver for medical care. Wed 5:30 p.m., 1575 Boulder St.
Get Wild: As a Coloradan, odds are you enjoy the outdoors. Help young women discover the same passion with 12th annual Gear & Cheer, which benefits the Women’s Wilderness Institute. Listen to live music while you bid on summer necessities like REI tents and Osprey packs, and trips like a day birding jaunt with the editor of Birding Magazine. Proceeds funnel into scholarship funds that help girls work on their backcountry survival skills. Thu 6 p.m., 1301 Spruce St., Boulder.
Give A Smile: Many see an annual visit to the dentist’s office as mandatory torture, but the truth is there are families across Colorado that can’t afford that basic care. That’s why the Colorado Orthodontic Foundation and Kids in Need of Dentistry work to provide dental care to families and individuals in need. Help them out by attending this event with appetizers and drinks from sponsors like Breckenridge Brewery and Wynkoop Brewing Company. Bonus points if you remember to floss afterwards. Thu 6:30 p.m.; RedLine Art Gallery.
