August 2007 Just a Taste
Though the much-anticipated Clyfford Still Museum isn't scheduled to open until 2010, 13 of the reclusive Abstract Expressionist's paintings are displayed in a fleeting summer preview exhibit at the DAM. Still's revolutionary post-World War II work altered art history, but more than 2,300 of his sought-after works have been hidden in his estate since he passed away in 1980, as he demanded in his will that they be publicly revealed only in a city that built a museum—a temple, really—devoted exclusively to his works. Denver stepped up in 2004 and gained control of the estate, but this will be the only sneak peek before the museum opens. Look for early figurative works and a 1940 self-portrait. Castle Culture
In a setting where rustic West meets Scottish dignity, the Cherokee Ranch & Castle in Sedalia hosts a performance series featuring some of Denver's most prestigious ensembles. This month's agenda includes shows by the Denver Brass (Aug. 4) and the Denver Center Theatre Company (Aug. 17). Preshow, guests enjoy wine tasting, a buffet dinner, and tours of the 19th-century castle. Bonus: Art aficionados will dig the castle's double duty as a museum, housing historic collections such as original drawings by Sir Christopher Wren, the architect of St. Paul's Cathedral in London. Playin' Outside
With a mission to encourage "unity amongst the community," SunStock 2007-The Unknownfest promises the ultimate outdoor festival vibe: blankets on the grass, frisbees, grills fired up, and, of course, local musicians galore. Bands and crooners on the up-and-up—and a few who already tote a rep (Wendy Woo, Rob Drabkin)—bring their acoustic skills to Grant Amphitheatre for a laid-back fresh-air jam sesh. Setting sun, mountain skyline, blanket on the riverbank...not a bad way to unwind on a Wednesday night. Throw in an outdoor big screen and some family classics (Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Big, The Sandlot, Beetlejuice) and even the kids will stay out of your hair.
