Natural Style
Outfit the whole clan in local and organic duds
By Natasha Gardner
August 2008

At some point in the last 50 years, the clothes in our closets transitioned from natural fibers like cotton to synthetic fabrics with names we can't pronounce or spell—think polyethelyne terephthalate (more commonly known as polyester). But the Organic Trade Association estimates that 39 percent of Americans are getting back to basics and searching out chemical-free products once again—chemical-free means irritant-free, for both the skin and the planet. Here are four Colorado companies that can clothe the entire family in comfortable and eco-friendly fashions.

For Mom Wisdom Sleeveless Tank, $37
Beckons Organic Boulderites Ann Sather and Becky Prater blend yoga functionality and fashion with their line of organic cotton clothes for women. The hip styles and colors work whether you're doing the Downward Dog or going to downtown brunch. 303-881-0872, www.beckonsorganic.com

For Dad Organic Oh Yes T-shirt in Sea Blue, $24
ONNO The folks at ONNO have been selling T-shirts for 15 years, but in 2007 they switched their focus to organic and natural fibers. Guys can stock up on basic tees in a handful of colors made from bamboo, hemp, and good ol' rain-fed cotton. Bonus: The Boulder company offsets its shipping emissions with carbon credits. 303-928-7170, www.onnotextiles.com

For Kids Organic Tee With Owl, $30-$32
Ohgeez Organic Clothing Company Owner Teresa Myers is a mom who understands the importance of keeping kids healthy and comfy at the same time. The Palisade-based biz manufactures its styles domestically—from fabric to thread to tags. 970-464-4664, www.ohgeezorganic.com

For Baby Kee Ka Socks, $4.99
Happy Green Baby This new Fort Collins company helps green-minded parents transition to life with baby. The online store—the website launched in June—offers organic outfits (think adorable onesies and mix 'n' match pants and tops), and other baby necessities such as blankies and bibs. Plus, the site provides tips that range from attempting cloth diapers to throwing eco-friendly baby showers. 970-493-4724, www.happygreenbaby.com
