Renaissance Man

Jake Weidmann's perfect penmanship.

March 2012

Jake Weidmann is writing himself into history books as he pens the preamble of Colorado’s Constitution in handwritten ink for the first time since it was machine-printed in 1876. (His work will get a permanent home in the new Ralph L. Carr Colorado Judicial Center when the building is completed next year.) Englewood’s Weidmann, 27, was commissioned for the job after becoming the world’s youngest known Master Penman, an honor for which he learned to perfectly execute 15 scripts—yes, as in pen and paper—from Old English to Spencerian cursive. Beyond that, the self-taught calligrapher, illustrator, painter, and sculptor is prepping for his public debut as an artist and penman this month. Catch Weidmann’s live demos on March 31, 6–9 p.m., at the Artwork Network Gallery and Event Center in the Santa Fe art district.
