The Denver Post laid off six major employees yesterday, including managing editor Gary Clark and assistant city editor Cynthia Pasquale, according to Westword [2], which quotes Clark as saying "cost cutting" is why he was let go. The news was just slightly better for employees at the Rocky Mountain News, which is owned by E.W. Scripps Co. Scripps employees were told yesterday that the company would institute pay cuts and suspend some retirement benefits, according to the Rocky [3]. But Rocky employees will be spared the hassle--only because Scripps is trying to sell the newspaper. Scripps is now expected to announce plans for the Rocky's future before March 31, according to this Rocky story [4]. In December, the company said that if a buyer can't be found the paper could be shuttered.
