President Barack Obama miscalculated, writes The Associated Press [2], when it comes to finding Democratic support for his plans to shut down the prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which holds alleged terrorists, and move them to U.S. soil--Supermax facilities, like the one in Florence. Colorado's two Democratic senators, Mark Udall and Michael Bennet, for instance, don't like the idea (via 5280 [3]). Now Republicans are using Democratic unease in their pleas that the controversial Gitmo, which houses about 240 suspects, remain open. Congressman Doug Lamborn, a Colorado Republican, tells Fox News [4] that he's opposed to bringing the detainees to any Supermax facility because the detainees would "gain U.S. constitutional rights, which really complicates being able to convict them in a federal court because we will have to compromise intelligence sources." Others in Colorado, including this Boulder Daily Camera [5] editorial, however, argue that closing Gitmo is the right thing to do. There are practical issues that go along with that, The Denver Post [6] noted last week, including that the Florence prison is chock full o'crooks and has just one bed to offer.
