How Conor Casey Led the U.S. Men's Soccer Team to the World Cup

Casey, ConorColorado sports fans were on system overload this weekend, as several high-profile games played out. Missing among the hype, however, was the World Cup-qualifying game played by the U.S. men's soccer team. The team beat Honduras 3-2, as Colorado Rapids star Conor Casey led the way with two goals (via ESPN [2]). The victory earns the U.S. men's team its sixth-straight trip to the World cup. The game featured one of the "most remarkable halves in U.S. Soccer history," writes Sports Illustrated [3], after the team overcame a 1-0 deficit to silence 45,000 rabid Honduran soccer fans to score three goals. SI calls Casey the "Man of the Match," pointing out that his name on the starting lineup was a surprise to most observers. Yet, he came through with the first two goals of his national-team career and earned the free kick that Landon Donovan turned into the team's third goal. Casey considers Denver his hometown and played locally for South High School, notes MLSnet.com [4].
