The San Francisco Chronicle's tech blog [2] notes that online giant Google is taking credit for generating an estimated $54 billion of economic activity in the U.S. last year, according to a report the online giant released [3] Tuesday. The study, a rare move by a major corporation, comes at a time when Google is "facing growing criticism over privacy practices and alleged anti-competitive behavior from public interest groups, competitors, and the government." In Colorado, Google employs about 100 workers---employees in Boulder mainly focus on engineering, sales, and support. But, the major economic impact, according to the company, is generated by Google Search and AdWords, Google AdSense, and Google Grants. AdWords, for instance, is an advertising program that generates $2 in business for every $1 businesses spend, the company estimates, according to the Denver Business Journal [4]. In all, Google claims it generated $880.2 million in business and nonprofit activity in Colorado last year through advertising.
