As someone newly diagnosed with celiac disease—and a recovering cupcake addict—I’ve been mourning the loss of baked goods in my diet. While plenty of places around town offer gluten-free variations of my old staples, most turn out to be dry, crumbly, and altogether unimpressive.
Enter City, O’ City [2], the popular vegetarian restaurant in Capitol Hill that bolsters its menu with an impressive selection of gluten-free baked goods. The fresh-from-the-oven muffins, cupcakes, scones, and cookies succeed with an abundance of flavor and ideal textures. My favorite—the gluten-free coconut cupcake, with its nutty, tropical flavor and perfect crumb—has my cupcake habit back on track.
Bonus: You’ll soon get a top-notch view of the Capitol Building while dining at City, O’ City (sister of the equally well-liked WaterCourse Foods [3]). The restaurant is doubling its current size by taking over the former Moxie Salon space next door. The expansion is scheduled to open by summer.
