I stopped into Jaya Asian Grill [2] to try a single dish—the classic Indonesian gado gado [3] salad—for a potential story, but I ended up eschewing that side for another item entirely. This one—the roti canal—was an afterthought, a quick add-on to a meal I'd already ordered.
The roti, an Indian-style pancake (essentially unleavened naan) came hot, buttery, and cut into triangles. While the chewy, crêpe-like bread was terrific on its own, it only got better when dunked in the mild curry sauce served alongside. I could eat this appetizer every single day.
If I have a criticism, it's that the curry could have been a bit thicker. But that didn't stop me from boxing up what remained and pouring it over that evening's roasted Brussels sprouts.
