Amid the news this week [2] that a supermarket is in the works at 20th Street and Chestnut Place, many reports have overlooked the fact that construction has already begun on another grocery store downtown.
Dean's Urban Market [3], located in the burgeoning Ballpark neighborhood (see Biker Jim's Gourmet Dogs Restaurant [4] and iFish Japanese Grill & Sushi Bar [5]), may open as early as July 1. The 12,500-square-foot, family-owned store will feature some of the same products as standard grocers—including Udi's [6] breads, Maverick Ranch [7]beef, and special dietary offerings (gluten-free, sugar-free)—with comparable pricing to other shops in the metro area.
"There's a need and an opportunity," says James Dean, store manager. "The population is moving back [downtown]. We want to cater to those people."
Dean's will have a large produce department that, during Colorado's growing season, will be stocked with local goods. As an independent operator, the store will be committed to custom-ordering products for shoppers by request, says Dean. That includes cakes to-order from an in-house pastry chef.
Dean's Urban Market will be open daily, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.
1415 Park Ave. W.
