Ahh, the Pop-Tart...those cardboardy rectangles take me right back to childhood. As an adult, I don't especially love the treat, but each time I come across a recipe [2] for the pastry or spy one in a bakery case, nostalgia tugs at me. And so it went at Sugar Bakeshop [3] on Broadway. There, on display near the cash register (to capitalize on impulse buys, perhaps?), were two renditions: cherry and Nutella. I bought them both.
Thanks to pieces of fruit inside the crust and a sweet glaze of icing, the cherry was the better of the two, but on both I found the pastry too thick. This resulted in a very dry, I-need-a-glass-of-milk-now experience with the Nutella. Even so, I finished them both.
Not seduced by Pop-Tarts? Pick up a chewy, pretzel-butterscotch-chocolate-chip cookie instead.
