Thanks to a reader tip, I've joined the throngs of Taste of Denmark [2] fans who line up for Ronny and Diana Tronoe's exquisite pastries. The Lakewood bakery's warm, sugared air intoxicates just as the selection of from-scratch croissants, kringles, scones, Danishes, strudels, macaroons, tartlets, and cookies overwhelms.

When I made it to the front of the line, I chose a half-dozen treats—and all were expertly buttery and sweet. My favorite item of all was a last-minute impulse: a thin, honeycomb-like waffle sandwiched with pastry cream and a dollop of raspberry jam. So simple and delicate, the cookie was especially satisfying when paired with a cup of strong, dark coffee.
