Cheap Thrills: Celebrate Esquire Theatre's 85th Anniversary

To celebrate an 85th anniversary, the traditional gift is wine. Denver's Esquire Theatre [2] (operated by Landmark Theatres [3]) is marking its 85th anniversary with soda and popcorn instead.

The movie theater was built in 1927 and originally had just one screen and a balcony. Today, it still maintains its quaint feel with two screens that showcase independent and foreign language films. In honor of this milestone, moviegoers can catch a screening of The Last Picture Show (watch the trailer [4]), a 1971 black-and-white starring Timothy Bottoms, Cybill Shepherd, Jeff Bridges, and Ellen Burstyn, on Wednesday, August 29. The film is a classic coming-of-age tale of a young football player living in a fictional small Texas town in the early '50s. It was nominated for eight Oscars.

Tickets are $5. A popcorn and soda combo is just $3 more.
