Judging from Colorado's number of dog parks , pet groomers, and doggie spas , our animals are spoiled. But not all of our four-legged friends are pampered. According to the Colorado Department of Agriculture , more than 16,000 dogs and cats were euthanized in Colorado last year. Colorado Springs' Chihuahua & Small Dog Rescue wants that number to decrease.
Next month, the organization will host Stepping Out: Little Paws Holidays Fashion Show , which will showcase small adoptable dogs at the Butterfly Pavilion in Westminster. All proceeds go to medical care of the foster animals. The pooches will wear fashions from boutique pet supplier Sophie Grace , and if you apply to adopt a dog that night and are approved, you'll also receive the outfit they model as a gift.
Get Involved: The organization's biggest need is for foster homes. "Even if we had a million foster homes, we would need one million and one," president Sue Fisher says. "Our philosophy is that we do not take dogs from out of state. We need to fix the problems at home before we try to fix the problems across the country." Though the rescue operation is technically based in Colorado Springs, Fisher says they have foster homes all across the state, especially in the Denver metro area.
