Best Bites: Toast's Chai Tea-Infused French Toast

Toast [2], a Littleton breakfast joint, is a paradise for french toast- and pancake-lovers like me. The restaurant (which also serves lunch) rotates its menu seasonally, and every fall I’m enticed by the signature chai tea-infused french toast.

A single order of the dish yields two colossal slices of thick, Udi’s [3] rustico bread, slathered in a secret custard recipe (this is where chai’s warming spices come in), and topped with sautéed Granny Smith apples, along with whipped cream and powdered sugar. Doused in a buttery brown-sugar-and-honey sauce, the treat tastes subtly like a spiced apple pie. It’s so decadent I can eat only one slice of the dessert-for-breakfast creation, but even that single piece puts me in the mood for fall.

Tip: The chai custard can make the french toast slightly soggy, so it’s best to finish it in one sitting. Bring a date and share, or take your sticky, saturated leftovers home and bake until slightly toasted.
