Beer Buzz: What's Your Favorite Beer?

Denver Beer Fest [2] is well underway, which means plenty of beer has already been consumed—but much more is still to be enjoyed. In the spirit of expanding our brew palate, we asked some Denverites to divulge their favorite beers. What we got was quite an eclectix mix. (Editor's Notes: Responses have been edited for clarity.)

Max MacKissock, chef, The Squeaky Bean [3]

What: TRVE Brewing Company [4]on Broadway is doing some really cool stuff right now. My favorite of their brews is a smoked tea saison called Diotima. Why: It's interesting and delicious. That being said, after a long night on the line, my favorite would have to be an ice-cold Coors!

Elise Wiggins, executive chef, Panzano [5] [5]

What: Lakefront Brewery Inc. [6]'s New Grist. Why: It's gluten-free. I don't eat gluten, and this is the tastiest I've found.

Michael Hancock, mayor of Denver

What: Mayor Mike's 5280 Brew at Denver Beer Co. [7] Why: It's my first brew, a pumpkin/harvest ale that is definitely on the top of the list.

Moe Elio, bartender, Ace [8]

What: Locally, the Ace Ale [brewed for Ace] by Mountain Sun Brewery [9]. Not so locally, Cigar City Brewing [10]'s Humidor IPA. Why: Ace Ale reminds me of a lighter saison that's not so boozy. Last year, I had the IPA  and thought it was the best tasting thing I have ever put in my mouth. In the Humidor Series, Cigar City is using aged Spanish cedar, the same wood used to make cigar boxes, which gives the beer notes of white pepper.

Christoph Heinrich, director, Denver Art Museum [11]

What: A hefeweizen [12]. Why: I like to get back to my German roots.

Shari Caudron, food critic, 5280

What: White Rascal from Avery Brewing Company [13] in Boulder—served with a wedge of orange. Why: I love the spicy coriander top note.

Drew Moor, Colorado Rapids [14] defender

What: Shiner Bock. [15] Why: It's just my favorite.

Melissa Durant, bartender, Green Russell [16]

What: Left Hand Brewing [17]'s Milk Stout. Why: It's the perfect beer for a rainy day (which is my favorite). It's light and creamy with enough body to stand up for itself. It's like chocolate milk for adults!
