Good news for anyone who was worried about Denver losing its iconic National Western Stock Show [2]: It isn’t going anywhere [3].
City officials announced yesterday that the January event, which has been a Denver staple for more than 100 years, won't move to Aurora, as was considered [4] more than a year ago with a plan that could have seen the show located next to a proposed hotel and convention center. That plan appears to have fallen through, though Stock Show officials have said the current location (near I-70, just north of downtown) still needs to be revamped.
The city’s historic stockyards—and the buildings that surround it—face $100 million in maintenance needs. Denver Mayor Michael Hancock said yesterday that the city will figure out ways to use the 95-acre complex for other events to help earn money to cover future maintenance and improvement costs.
The 107th Stock Show runs from January 12–27.
