Here are four ways to get involved this week that are worth your time, money, and taste buds.
FEAST: Nosh on a wide range of fermented foods and beverages at Boulder Food Rescue’s fundraiser Feast of Fermentation  on August 29 at Shine  Restaurant. Sample beer, wine, cheese, bread, kimchi, and other fermented treats in the tasting room ($40), or opt for an added four-course meal prepared by Chef Jessica of Shine ($99). Bonus: A silent auction will offer prizes such as a bike-to-farm lunch tour and a year’s supply of bacon. Boulder Food Rescue  is a nonprofit that redistributes fresh and healthy food that would be tossed by businesses to organizations that serve the homeless and hungry.
BOOGIE: Get fit while you dance in a judgment-free zone at the last Zumba class of the summer, held this Wednesday at Sixth Avenue United Church of Christ  in Denver. A $5 contribution goes to support the Denver Center for Crime Victims  (DCCV).
JUDGE: Watch and take part in a cooking competition  August 28 styled after reality television show “The Voice.” Eight up-and-coming chefs from Denver-area eateries will be spotlighted as their culinary creations are judged by four local celebrity chefs—and all 200 attendees. A general admission ticket ($75) includes a tasting dish from each contestant and cookbook. Proceeds benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation .
HIKE: You were probably going to go on a hike next weekend anyway, weren’t you? Add a little community service into your typical excursion by climbing to Summit Lake Park  (just over 13,000 feet) with Volunteers for Outdoor Colorado  on August 31. The group will help restore the growth of vulnerable plants around Summit Lake and repair the park’s stone shelter. Departure will be at 7:30 a.m. and a light breakfast and lunch will be provided.
