Wheat Ridge Animal Hospital has the only 24-hour veterinary blood bank in the Denver metro area. “Our canine blood donor program began with the rising need for blood products in our critical patients,” says Melissa Flygare, the hospital’s marketing coordinator. “Our goal is to expand the program in the new hospital space. Every donation can save multiple lives,” she says. The blood is used internally and is also distributed to other facilities both in and out of state. They are always screening and accepting new canine donors. These lifesavers need to be over 55 lbs., have a good temperament and come in six times a year for a donation. Specially trained assistants and certified veterinary technicians complete the donation in just a few minutes and there are benefits given to each donor family. “Our donor dogs and families are the heroes of this program,” adds Flygare. With many dogs that have saved over 100 lives, Doug (pictured above) is new to the program but has already saved 18 lives! Doug and his parents are dedicated to the program and helping those in need.
