Meet Jacob. Jacob was vaguely familiar with Metro Caring before he shopped in our Fresh-Foods Market for the first time. Two summers ago, Jacob experienced a medical emergency. The ambulance and hospital bills that followed were more than a slight setback. Even though he was working, these bills, combined with the costs of being an undergraduate student at Metropolitan State University of Denver, forced on Jacob an unhealthy diet of ramen and potatoes, exacerbating his Type-1 Diabetes. Although he loves fresh produce, he simply couldn’t afford it.
Despite the stigma of being a college student relying on food assistance, Jacob called Metro Caring to set up his first shopping appointment. “Metro Caring turned all of my ideas about food banks around,” said Jacob. “Everyone was so welcoming. There was no judgment. I was amazed by the offerings of fresh fruits and vegetables.”
Every year, thousands of individuals in Denver, like Jacob, face food insecurity. Metro Caring is here to help! Our strategic approach to ending hunger includes a free, fresh-foods market, nutrition and gardening education, and tools for self-sufficiency such as our Seeds for Success job-training program, financial literacy education, and state-wide ID procurement. Over 400 weekly volunteers contribute to daily operations.
Your investment in Metro Caring will support programs that lift up our community and help families reach their potential. Together, we can feed Denver!
