Denverites are passionate about craft beer—and everyone, it seems, has an opinion on where to get the freshest pours, the widest selection on tap, and the best range of local brews.

Freshcraft (tagline: “Fresh food, craft beer”), which opened in LoDo a little more than two months ago, is new on the scene. The spot offers 20 beers on tap and an impressive 100 beers by the bottle, but what sets it apart from other local taphouses is its diverse menu, which includes everything from croque monsieur to mole portobello tacos to duck cassoulet.

Last week, I stopped by to sample the menu. While I applaud the creativity behind each dish, it seems the kitchen is still working out some kinks. The cassoulet, advertised as a large plate, was really no more than a small, round crock, which was fine for lunch but not the meal the menu made it out to be. Plus, the dish was overwhelmed by toasted breadcrumbs and rendered almost tasteless by a lack of salt. My friend, who arrived hungry after a morning of cycling, was unable to finish his portobello tacos due to the same lack of flavor. Freshcraft has the right idea; the kitchen just needs a bit of fine-tuning.

On the plus side, our server was knowledgeable and enthusiastic, and our beers were super fresh and perfectly chilled.
