The River North Art District—just north of downtown Denver—has become a hub for the city’s art scene, with more than 60 studios and galleries located in the industrial area. Now we can add one more to the list: aBuzz Gallery, which opened last night in the Dry Ice Factory.

The one-room space bills itself as a contemporary gallery that aims to showcase works by newbie and established artists alike, across a variety of media. Although it sounds pretty typical—aBuzz’s business model is anything but. Denver-based fiber artist Carol Ann Waugh started the gallery as a way for artists to both show their works and gain some business savvy. All artists will pay a straight fee to exhibit their pieces for three weeks, including opening and closing receptions, artist talks, and First Fridays; Waugh’s added value—she has an MBA—is that she’ll create a customized marketing plan for each artist. aBuzz also does’t take any commission on works sold.

“When I became a full-time artist four years ago, I was amazed at how little artists knew about how to market their work to potential buyers,” Waugh said in a release. “Most art departments in colleges don’t spend much time on giving students the skills they need to make a living as an artist so my mission in opening this gallery is to do just that.”

The first artist up: Waugh herself. View a variety of her intricate, brightly hued pieces (pictured, right) now through June 30. Or get a broader picture of RiNo with a tour of the area during May 11’s RiNo Art Safari.
