In 1960 (well before barefoot running was mainstream), Ethiopian Abebe Bikila ran through the streets of Rome sans shoes on his way to becoming the first African to win Olympic gold in the marathon. Bikila, who won back-to-back gold medals in the event, is the protaganist of the biopic The Athlete.
