Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper has kicked off this year’s One Book, One Denver Program by choosing Caramelo, by Sandra Cisneros, as the book all Denverites should read.
One Denver program is designed to encourage Denver residents to read the same book and to participate in community events centered on the novel and its author.Advertisement
Caramelo is a generational saga.
Told through the eyes of Celaya (whose nickname is Lala), it describes the Mexican-American immigrant experience and Lala’s growth to adulthood. Hickenlooper called it a story of “love, culture, history and coming of age with imagery that is poetic.”
