At 4:30 p.m., law enforcement spokespersons from several agencies gathered at the U.S. Courthouse downtown to announce a major gang bust. The arrests are the product of an 18 month investigation. Here are all the agencies that participated:
The FBI, Metro Gang Task Force, Denver and Aurora police, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms and the Drug Enforcement Agency.
Agents are rounding up those indicted today. I just checked the federal court docket and there are at least three cases with more than ten defendants each, all of which involve cocaine and wiretaps. Some of the charges involve firearms. U.S. Attorney Troy Eid said more than 40 weapons were seized. 9 News is reporting that more than 50 people have been charged in five cases. As to the supposed Darrent Williams connection, Brian Hicks, the owner of the SUV from which the shots were fired that killed Williams, is one of the defendants charged in one of the new drug cases. None of the cases filed today relate to Williams’ murder. Hicks was in jail the night Williams was killed. This is a big day for law enforcement. What remains to be seen is if they got the big fish or just a bunch of minnows.
