Michael Bennet Becomes the Baby-Face of the Senate

Forty-four-year-old Michael Bennet is the youngest member of the U.S. Senate. Coupled with Colorado’s other new senator, Mark Udall, “you might say, the state of Colorado has two junior senators,” writes The Caucus, a New York Times blog.

The Washington Post wonders what message Bennet’s appointment, among others, says about the glass ceiling in D.C.

Though Bennet would like to roll up his sleeves and score a seat on the Agriculture Committee, a separate post by The Caucus notes that the former super of Denver Public Schools seems ideal to fill an open seat on the Health, Education, Pension and Labor Committee. Bennet may also be tapped to fill the one vacancy on the Indian Affairs Committee.

Bennet was officially confirmed yesterday, and on his way to the hearing, Senator John McCain introduced himself as “the greeter,” according to The Washington Post. Shortly thereafter, Vice President Joe Biden, who chided Chief Justice John Roberts for tripping over his words as he swore in President Barack Obama, “flubbed” himself in delivering the oath to Bennet, as a Weekly Standard blog points out.
