Members of a U.S. House of Representatives panel yesterday “ripped” Dan Dueber, chief executive of the Colorado Springs-based Coast Independent Review Board, a company that helps ensure the safety of patients in medical studies, according to the Gazette.

The Government Accountability Office, the investigative arm of Congress, investigated lax standards at Coast, which supervises hundreds of studies, by setting up a fake company–with a dog named Trooper as the president–to study a made-up product, according to The Associated Press. Two other review boards rejected the proposal bait that Coast fell for, finding the the fraud, according to the Gazette, yet Coast approved the study unanimously.

“The evidence suggests that Coast was more concerned with its bottom line than it was with patient safety,” says subcommittee Chairman Bart Stupak.

Dueber admitted no wrongdoing, blaming the government instead. As for Trooper, he doesn’t have much credibility in medical circles, but he’s a real three-legged dog that belongs to a Capitol Hill staffer, according to The Wall Street Journal.
