President Barack Obama’s policies in Afghanistan are good ones, according to Mark Udall, who joined fellow U.S. senators in a visit to the war-mired country over the weekend. Speaking from the region on Memorial Day via telephone, Udall said the United States’ strategy of trying to eliminate the Taliban and other insurgents while securing areas with new forces and civilian assistance is working, reports the Pueblo Chieftain. “I came away believing we are on the right track in Afghanistan with more of our troops focusing on counterinsurgency efforts,” Udall says, adding that he backs increasing troop levels in Afghanistan, which are expected to soon reach 68,000. Udall says the prior strategy in the region, under President George W. Bush was, “killing the bad guys but not much else, frankly,” writes The Associated Press. Udall was joined in the trip by Democratic Senators Tom Carper of Delaware, Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Kay Hagan of North Carolina, and Mark Begich of Alaska–all members of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, notes The Hill.
