Larimer County will pay $225,000 to the family of Timothy Mathis, a Loveland man who went into cardiac arrest and died in 2005 after he struggled with sheriff’s deputies wielding Taser stun guns. That’s according to the Loveland Reporter-Herald, which points out that the settlement avoids a trial that was supposed to begin this week. The suit claimed deputies used excessive force and were not properly trained to use the stun guns, writes the Fort Collins Coloradoan. The settlement, which declares the deputies were not at fault, was a “business” decision designed to avert a potentially larger award from a jury, says county attorney George Haas. Meanwhile, in Boulder, Mamacitas restaurant is suing Colorado Security Services, a private company, after a double-Taser incident. The suit claims Harvey Epstein, the son of restaurant owner Carmen Epstein, is no longer able to work after the Taser incident caused post-traumatic stress, reports The Colorado Daily.
