One Elevated Voices reader left Basalt yesterday around noon, heading east for the Denver area on I-70. About one hour into her trip, traffic came to a stop and then turned into a relentless, brake-squeaking crawl. She went “halfway insane” by the time she hit the usual crush of Sunday-afternoon traffic in Idaho Springs and finally arrived in the Denver area after 7 p.m. The 180-mile trip, which should have taken less than half that time, according to Mapquest, was slowed when a tanker filled with crude oil overturned around Edwards, reports 9News. Further west, there was another accident at Silt, where a truck crashed into a bridge. “Lightning and other concerns prevented immediate cleanup” after the accident at Edwards before authorities announced the interstate would be closed for several more hours, according to the Vail Daily. Meanwhile, the Fort Collins Coloradoan reports that the 35-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 287 between Fort Collins and the Wyoming state line is a deathtrap: 40 people have died on that part of the road since January 1, 1998, and nobody seems to be able to explain why.
