A visit and a couple phone calls later and we discovered that while there haven’t been any changes in management or in the kitchen, there have been price increases. And significant ones at that. When we originally dined, a side order of falafel ran $3.95. Now it costs $4.45. Both the chicken kafta and the lamb-and-beef shawarma have gone from $8.95 to $11.95. Even the baklava is five cents more expensive.
Hassan Ben, Mecca’s manager, says the boost occurred before our issue hit newsstands. We know the prices were accurate as of March 12 when we called Mecca to fact check the story three weeks before we went to press.
All this aside, we still view Mecca as a bargain, if only for sheer portion size. An order of any of the main entrées ($10.75 to $14.45) can feed two—especially if you add a side dish.
