Morning Eats: Breggos

My morning routine often includes an Americano and a cheesy breakfast sandwich from the Tattered Cover Book Store. But a co-worker recently encouraged me to break the pattern and order a Breggo, a breakfast calzone available at the bookstore and other local coffeeshops.

Yesterday morning I forwent my usual order and chose a veggie Breggo from the six flavors stacked inside the pastry case. The Boulder-made morning eat has a lot going for it: It’s self-contained, hand-held, and hearty. As a bonus, the goodies—in my case, spinach, tomatoes, mushrooms, scrambled eggs, potatoes, and cheddar and Colby cheeses—are encased in freshly made dough.

The serving is generous, so I figured I’d save half for later. But once I tasted the combination of fresh vegetables, buttery eggs, and yeasty bread, I jettisoned my original plan and ate the entire calzone.

Tip: While the folks at the Tattered Cover will happily microwave a Breggo for you, I advise heating it up yourself in the toaster oven or the panini press. That way, the dough remains chewy and nutty instead of becoming soggy.
