More than two decades have passed since the murder of Peggy Hettrick in Fort Collins. The case was believed solved in 1999, but that was before DNA evidence proved Timothy Masters innocent, leading to his release and subsequent $5.9 million legal settlement with Fort Collins and a $4.1 million settlement with Larimer County.

Now, Colorado Attorney General John Suthers says tests using new “touch DNA” technology have yielded new evidence in Hettrick’s slaying.

“I think we’ve moved the ball down the field,” Suthers tells the Coloradoan in an exclusive interview.

Still, the AG is cautious about discussing the case, which is under state grand jury investigation. While he cannot say whether there will be any prosecution in the case, he reveals that the evidence on Hettrick’s clothing was found after paying a Dutch company about $100,000 for analysis.
